Global protectionism will hurt Korean steelmakers

The Korean steel industry is facing new challenges as protectionism spreads.According to the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, or Kotra, yesterday, the U.S. steel industry could take legal action against dumping, or selling items below cost. This is a red flag for Korean steel producers. Just last month, the European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries, or Eurofer, dropped an antidumping lawsuit against Korean stainless steel products.

The polymer makers are facing a demand slump resulting in lower prices. In the December quarter, most of the refineries globally had drastically cut production as there was a sudden drop in demand for petrochemicals and polymers due to the slowdown.

The United States is set to conduct anti-dumping investigations into Korean steel products.U.S. Steel and other American steel makers are accusing Korean steel mills of selling products below costs, KOTRA said Tuesday. Their main target is China, the largest steel exporter to U.S., but Korea is also likely to fall prey to the action as the third largest exporter, the nation's state-run trade promotion firm said.
