Banarasi silk industry again in danger zone

VARANASI: Is the world famous handwoven Banarasi silk saree industry heading towards its doom for want of dedicated weavers? Or, despite imposition of anti-dumping duty on Chinese silk fabric, cheap Chinese silk is still flooding the market, putting Indian silk industry out of business? The anti-dumping duty imposed is for five years and in force till April 2011. Whatever may be the reason, but there is a need to give serious attention to this sector that got the Geographical Indication (GI) tag and joined the league of other GI products, like 'Tirupati laddu' and 'Darjeeling tea', a year back.
Argentina, India to take up agri exports issues

New Delhi: Agriculture minister of Argentina Julian Dominguez would visit New Delhi on Monday to strengthen bilateral trade between the two countries. Apart from meeting his counterpart, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, discussing export of soy oil, pulses and food processing technologies, Dominguez is expected to ink three major agreements during the visit.
