Shrimp group against proposed Thailand settlement

A Mississippi-based association of shrimp processors is protesting a rival group’s proposed settlement that would end the antidumping order on shrimp from Thailand.
The American Shrimp Processors Association said the Southern Shrimp Alliance is selling out the American shrimp industry to Thailand in order to make a quick buck.
Southern Shrimp and the Thai Frozen Foods Association announced the proposal on Nov. 2. The American Shrimp group said the announcement provided no details on the amount of money Southern Shrimp would receive in the settlement or what SSA would do with the money received in the settlement.
The U.S. Commerce Department rejected the proposal, saying the SSA does not represent substantially all of the domestic shrimp industry. But the American Shrimp Processors say that SSA has continued its lobbying efforts, with the help of the firm of former Louisiana Sen. John Breaux.
