Lamy Highlights Decline in Anti-Dumping Investigations
04/03/2012 12:00
WTO Director-General, Pascal Lamy, spoke on Monday (27 February) at the opening of the Fifth Workshop for Heads of Investigating Authorities in Geneva.
Lamy stated that "there had been a significant decline in initiations of new anti-dumping investigations, from 213 in 2008 down to 153 in 2011". Lamy also highlighted that despite continuing economic instability, trade remedy actions have not increased since the beginning of the crisis in 2008.
The WTO defines trade remedies as import restraints that are permissible according to agreed WTO principles. These include safeguards, countervailing duties and anti-dumping measures. Despite the overall state of trade remedy activity, the use of countervailing measures has, however, increased since 2005 as members attempt to protect themselves from subsidized imports affecting their country's economy.
