To meet the demand of the weavers in Benares and Kanchipuram, the government is importing 2000 tonnes of high quality silk from China, Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran said in New Delhi on Thursday.
Maran said the weavers in the famous silk centres at Benares and Kanchipuram have been complaining of shortage of high quality silk for quite some time.
"We are importing 2000 tonnes of high quality silk from China which will be provided to weavers in Kanchipuram and Benares," he said.
The government has imposed anti-dumping duty on silk to protect the domestic industry, Maran said adding that he would like to see the member wearing a Benares silk saree the next time she walks in Parliament.
