EU imposes provisional anti-dumping duties on Chinese glass fiber

BRUSSELS, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission on Thursday imposed a provisional anti-dumping duty on imports of some glass fiber products from China.

The 43.6-percent duty will be applied to the Chinese products for six months at most, according to a decision the European Union (EU)'s executive arm released in its official journal.

The commission opened the anti-dumping probe into Chinese glass fiber, which is widely used in wind turbines, cars and ships, in December after receiving a complaint from the European Glass Fiber Producers Association.

It would be up to the EU governments to decide whether to impose definite duties on the Chinese products, usually lasting five years, as the investigation continues.

European fiberglass users have voiced opposition to the duties, fearing increases in their production costs.

The commission Thursday also opened an anti-subsidy probe into wireless modems imported from China, marking the first time that a single Chinese product came under three types of trade investigations by the European Union (EU) at the same time.

The commission had already initiated an anti-dumping investigation and a safeguard measure probe into the Chinese modems in June, or wireless wide area networking (WWAN) modems, to be specific.
