China to Probe U.S., South Korea Solar Products

BEIJING—China will start antidumping investigations into imports of U.S. and South Korean solar products, the government said in a statement Friday.
The Ministry of Commerce said in a separate statement that it would also carry out an antisubsidy investigation into U.S. solar product imports. It added that the U.S. and China started discussions on solar product subsidies on Tuesday.
The commerce ministry said it was specifically investigating imports of solar-grade polysilicon, which is used to make solar cells. It added that Chinese companies had petitioned it to examine the impact of low-priced solar product imports from the U.S. and South Korea on the domestic industry.
In May the U.S. Commerce Department found several Chinese solar panel companies guilty of dumping and slapped tariffs of 31% on their products. Analysts said though the step could help U.S. panel makers, it could add to trade tensions and lead to rising costs across the industry.
