China is the most frequent target of antidumping investigations, according to a report issued Wednesday by the World Trade Organization.

Beijing was named in 40 of the 101 new antidumping investigations launched by WTO members in the second half of last year.

Such probes are aimed at finding whether a country is exporting products to another country at a cost below that in the home market. Antidumping measures usually include punitive tariffs calculated according to the amount of damage countries believe their domestic industries have suffered.

South Korea and Thailand were the targets of eight new probes each, while the European Union with five, and the United States with four, were named less frequently.

Chinese products were also the most frequent target of new measures to counter dumping,

India initiated the highest number of new investigations - 31 - against suspected price dumping. Washington launched two dozen new probes between July 1 and Dec. 31, while South Korea initiated 10.

he machinery and equipment sector was most often the subject of new investigations, followed by chemicals, textiles, and base metals.
