Bolombo, 11 December, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing has initiated a programme to promote Sri Lanka’s leather industry in the city of Baigou, in Hebei Province where the leather industry is prominently established in China. The Baigou city is famous for its bag industry and is hailed as the "City of Bags" in China.
Protectionism Is the Worst Protection

One of the causes of the Great Depression and, indirectly, the catastrophe of World War II was the growth in the early 1930s of protectionism -- that is, helping domestic producers gain unrivaled access to consumers by raising tariffs on imports. It is not surprising, then, that economists are worried that today's leaders might pour gasoline on the fire by hiking import tariffs and subsidizing exports in an effort to give their citizens short-term relief from the negative effects of the financial crisis.

The easy availability of raw material and skilled manpower at relatively much lower cost is expected to keep the demand for Indian footwear buoyant in near future. "Indian Footwear Industry Analysis", a new report by RNCOS, expects the Indian footwear retail market to grow at a CAGR of over 20% through 2011.

The Uruguay Round Agreements Act requires the Department of Commerce to revoke an antidumping or countervailing duty order, or terminate a suspension agreement, after five years unless the Department of Commerce and the ITC determine that revoking the order or terminating the suspension agreement would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of dumping or subsidies (Commerce) and of material injury (ITC) within a reasonably foreseeable time.

This review covers two manufacturer/exporters of the subject merchandise, Companhia Siderurgica Nacional ("CSN") and Companhia Siderurgica de Tubarao ("CST"), and covers the period March 1, 2007, through February 29, 2008. No interested party commented on the Department's intent to rescind this review upon determining that the parties subject to this review did not have entries during the period of review ("POR") for which to assess antidumping duties.
