The request was made by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) at the 19th Korea-China Trade Remedy Cooperation Meeting and the 4th Korea-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Trade Remedy Implementation Committee Meeting with the Trade Remedy Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Commerce of China, which was held at the Korean International Trade Association building in southern Seoul on Sept. 5.

The Korea-China Trade Remedy Cooperation Meeting has been held annually since 2000 to review trade remedies such as anti-dumping measures and changes in trade-related laws and policies. The FTA Trade Remedy Implementation Committee Meeting is held in conjunction with the Trade Remedy Cooperation Conference to check on and discuss the implementation of the Korea-China FTA that went into effect in 2015.

During the meeting, the MOTIE requested that China apply trade remedies more fairly and minimize regulatory measures, taking into consideration the fact that China had the third most import restrictions against Korea following the United States and India.

China's import regulations on Korea are 18 cases mainly involving chemical and steel products. Of the 18 cases, 16 including 15 anti-dumping cases and one safeguard case have already been regulated. Two anti-dumping cases including one about polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM) are under investigation.

The MOTIE demanded a fair and objective investigation of two chemical products being looked into by the Chinese government. It also requested an early termination of anti-dumping tariffs on solar polysilicon under review.
