EU, NZ Reach Customs Cooperation Agreement

The EU and New Zealand have signed an Agreement on Cooperation and Mutual Administrative Assistance in Customs Matters.
Under the agreement, EU and New Zealand customs authorities will exchange more information, with the aim of ensuring the proper application of customs legislation. According to the EU, the agreement will help in the investigation, prevention, and combatting of breaches of customs law.
The European Commission said the agreement provides a comprehensive framework for cooperation in the area of customs, with the objective of ensuring effective controls and facilitating legitimate trade.
The deal will promote modern and simple procedures, to save time and money in getting goods through customs, and prevent harmful or illegal goods from entering the European market.
Trade in goods between the EU and New Zealand was worth EUR8.1bn (USD9.2bn) in 2016, with the trade in services worth a further EUR4.3bn in 2015.
