WTO agrees to rule on Chinese complaint

GENEVA, Switzerland, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- The World Trade Organization said Tuesday it would rule on a case brought by China against the United States concerning punitive import duties.
The United States has imposed anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on two types of steel pipes, pneumatic tires and woven sacks, the Financial Times reported Tuesday.
Dumping is the practice of selling products abroad at prices lower than the products fetch in the producer country.
China is concerned with the U.S. practice of investigating unfair dumping or subsidies by using price comparisons from other countries, rather than China, the Times said.
China also says slapping a product with two punitive duties -- one for dumping and one for unfair subsidies -- amounts to a "double remedy," and should be stopped.
A final verdict on the case, accounting for appeals and procedural delays, is likely to come at the end of the year or in 2010, the Times said.
