Vietnamese durian achieves great success in China

According to information from Chinese Customs, Vietnamese durian topped the market share in China last year, with over 50%, equivalent to 940,000 tons.

Notably, for the first time, Viet Nam surpassed Thailand in total exports of fresh durian to the country with the world's largest population. This is considered a significant development for Vietnam's durian industry.

Specifically, over the past year, the Chinese market imported more than 1.8 million tons of durian from five countries, with Viet Nam leading the way. This result was achieved thanks to the involvement of businesses and local authorities in strengthening control over growing areas, packaging codes, and traceability.

According to experts, to maintain market share and sustain this growth rate, consistent quality and transparent sourcing remain key factors.

For an agricultural product to increase its value and maintain its position in the market, it is essential not only to focus on production volume but also on ensuring quality. China's approval of more planting area codes and packaging facilities for exporting durian from Viet Nam is considered an advantage.

According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, localities and businesses need to proactively seize this opportunity, while ensuring strict compliance with regulations on plant quarantine and food safety in order to export sustainably.

Having relied on durian farming for over 10 years, Mr. Nguyen Van Hien (Truong Long commune, Can Tho city) used to be very worried because prices didn't meet his expectations. Since joining a cooperative, this farmer is not only secure about the market for his produce but also regularly receives training and updates on new techniques, thus meeting the requirements of the export market. "The market is very stable, and the technical staff are well-trained. The companies send their staff down to train us," Mr. Hien shared.

As export markets increasingly tighten standards, the focus is no longer on how much to grow, but rather on how to grow it in a way that meets technical requirements while ensuring traceability. Due to this pressure, controlling planting area codes is receiving special attention.

Mr. Tran Quoc Toan, Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade , said: "The implementation aims to ensure that the planting area codes are issued appropriately. For packaging facilities, they must also meet the conditions and standards to be granted a packaging facility code. Only then will we have the necessary conditions and basis to export to our target markets."

In 2025, durian exports are expected to bring in $3.86 billion for Viet Nam, an increase of over 20% compared to the previous year and accounting for over 45% of the total export value of fruits and vegetables. 2026 and subsequent years are expected to be a pivotal period, as Vietnamese durian production shifts strongly from "quantity" to "quality," from rapid growth to sustainable growth.

In particular, the plan for implementing traceability of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products for the period 2026-2030, initially applied to durian, is considered a positive step to provide maximum support for the multi-billion dollar industry in the coming years.
