Vietnam seeks anti-dumping duties on 4 steel exporters

Vietnam will conduct an anti-dumping review on the imported cold-welding stainless steel of exporters from China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Taiwan, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has announced.

The decision, realized by a directive signed by deputy minister Tran QuocKhanh earlier this week, came after a complaint by the POSCO VST Co Ltd, and InoxHoaBinh Co, two local steel makers.

The plaintiffs said steel products from these exporters are sold at much lower prices than those locally manufactured.

The review will be conducted by the ministry’s Competition Management Agency on the batches of products imported between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013.

Stainless cold steel is the third commodity Vietnam has sought anti-dumping duties for since 2009, the others being float glass and cooking oil.

In a separate development, many local steel manufacturers voiced protests at a meeting held by the Vietnam Steel Association on Thursday that Chinese steel exporters have shown signs of unhealthy competition in Vietnam.

Specifically, the Chinese steel is declared at the customs agency as being mixed with boron, in order to enjoy the preferential tax for alloy steel, while the content of boron is in fact very small, only 0.08 percent, the steel companies said.
