U.S. Weighing More Antidumping Cases, Mainly Against Chinese Steel

DAVOS, Switzerland—U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said her department has more antidumping cases under consideration now than at any time in the last 15 years—most of them steel cases involving China.
“We have more antidumping cases in front us this year than we’ve had in 15 years, two thirds of them are steel cases, and a vast majority of which involve China,” she said in a brief interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum annual meeting here.
Chinese steel exports have surged as the country’s growth have slowed and its producers have increasingly turned to export markets, generating complaints from competitors all over the world.
Ms. Pritzker said the issue was garnering a lot of attention from a lot of countries and was the subject of a coming meeting of governments of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in April. She also said unspecified multilateral measures were possible. “I think there are multiple tools in the tool chest, but I think there’s an opportunity for multilateral solutions as well,” she said.
