Processed products account for a high market share in fruit and vegetable exports

Business investments and market demand are helping processed products gain an increasingly larger market share in Viet Nam's fruit and vegetable exports.
Investing in processing technology for strategic products.
Built and put into operation in 2014 in Phu Hoi Industrial Park, Duc Trong commune, Lam Dong province, the fruit processing plant of Truong Hoang Lam Dong Trading and Service Co., Ltd. currently focuses on producing main products from passion fruit such as passion fruit juice concentrate, dried passion fruit, etc.
Ms. Bui Thi Thuy Ha, Deputy Director of Truong Hoang Lam Dong Enterprise, said that the factory has a capacity of 52,000 tons of raw materials per year, and is currently being upgraded to 78,000 tons. In addition to processed products from passion fruit, the factory also processes products from several other fruits such as avocado and mango.
Even before the factory was built, Truong Hoang Lam Dong had a contract to export concentrated passion fruit juice to the EU. To date, the entire production of concentrated passion fruit juice is exported, with the EU market accounting for approximately 80%. The entire production of dried passion fruit is exported to the US.
Ms. Thuy Ha shared that the demand for processed passion fruit products is increasing. For example, in 2026, customer demand for the factory's dried fruit is expected to increase by 30%, while concentrated fruit juice will increase by 10%... Therefore, since its operation began, Truong Hoang Lam Dong's fruit processing factory has had to expand its capacity several times.
At the same time, the company has partnered with farmers in Lam Dong and many other localities in the Central Highlands region to produce passion fruit raw materials on an area of 1,500-2,000 hectares. After harvesting, up to 70% of the passion fruit is processed, with only 30% sold as fresh fruit.
Similarly to Hoang Lam Dong School, in recent years, many companies in the fruit and vegetable industry have invested in building factories to process fruit products, meeting the needs of both the domestic and export markets. With the investment of these companies, processed fruit products are increasingly gaining a larger market share in Viet Nam's fruit exports.
In 2025, exports of processed fruits and vegetables exceeded $2 billion for the first time, a 42.1% increase compared to 2024. With a value of $2.06 billion, processed fruits and vegetables accounted for approximately 24% of total fruit and vegetable exports in 2025, an increase from a market share of over 20% in 2024.
According to the Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), in the first four months of 2026, the structure of exported fruit and vegetable products continued to show a strong shift from traditional fresh produce to products with higher added value.
According to data from the Viet Nam Customs Department, the proportion of processed fruit exports increased from 29.33% in the first four months of 2025 to 35.82% in the first four months of 2026. This is helping to increase the added value of Vietnamese fruit and reduce dependence on the seasonality of fresh fruit.
Shifting the structure of the fruit and vegetable industry.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, Vice President of the Viet Nam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), assessed that the structure of fruit and vegetable exports is undergoing a positive shift, with the proportion and value of processed goods increasing; businesses are increasingly interested in investing in deep processing such as frozen products, dried products, or concentrated fruit juices.
The potential for expanding the export market share of processed fruits and vegetables remains enormous. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung stated that over 70% of Viet Nam's fruit and vegetable products are currently exported fresh. The capacity for deep processing in the fruit and vegetable industry is limited, processed products are quite poor in variety, packaging is not truly attractive, and they lack the capacity to regulate product consumption during peak seasons.
Therefore, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung believes that the Government and local authorities need to have policies to encourage large corporations to invest heavily in deep processing plants right in concentrated fruit and vegetable growing areas.
The strong growth in processed fruit and vegetable exports is driving overall fruit and vegetable exports to achieve high growth. According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in the first five months of this year, fruit and vegetable exports are estimated at US$2.98 billion, an increase of 29.4% compared to the same period in 2015.
