LG, Samsung Drum Washing Machines Sell Well Despite US Anti-dumping Duties

SEOUL, KOREA – Despite the US government’s anti-dumping duties imposed on LG, Samsung washing machines, LG and Samsung Electronics have succeeded in jacking up their share of the US drum washing machine market. Amid the criticism that the US government’s such a measure is a manifestation of protectionism, more US consumers opted for Korean-made washing machines. As the US market is switching from top loading washing machines to drum washing machines, Korean washing machine producers are expected to gain more ground in the US.

According to market researcher The Stevenson Company, LG Electronics ranked first with a 25.1% share of the US drum washing machine market while Samsung Electronics finished second with a 16.5% share. US washing machine maker Whirlpool seized the No.3 spot with a 13.3% share.

Korean companies’ combined share of the US washing machine market expanded even further after Whirlpool filed a anti-dumping complaint against LG and Samsung Electronics in December of 2011 on their imports from Korea and Mexico, claiming they were being sold below the market value.
