Japan takes South Korea to WTO over valves

TOKYO -- The Japanese government requested Thursday that the World Trade Organization form a panel to oversee a dispute involving anti-dumping duties imposed by South Korea on Japanese pneumatic valves.
Japan and South Korea held consultations in April, but Seoul maintained that it was justified in imposing an additional duty of about 11-23% on the valves on top of the standard 8% tariff. A dispute settlement panel, consisting of legal experts and scientists from countries uninvolved in the case, could be created by the end of the month.
This is the 18th case Japan has brought to the WTO. The valves in question are used in semiconductor and auto assembly lines. Japan will continue arguing that its products have different uses from the South Korean ones, and therefore should not be considered unfair competition.
