The Japanese government is considering setting an import quota for US rice as a compromise toward reaching a broad agreement in Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade negotiations.

Rice imports are the main sticking point between the 2 countries. Washington is demanding Japan boost its imports from the US by 175,000 tons. Tokyo opposes the idea, citing the possible negative impact on Japanese farmers.

The Japanese government is making arrangements to introduce an import quota of about 70,000 to 80,000 tons.

It is not known whether the US will accept the proposal.

Tokyo hopes to resolve disagreements with the US when ministers from the 12 participating nations meet in Hawaii starting on July 28.

Japan and the US are expected to exclude 5 categories of farm products from the items Japan is to abolish tariffs on.

The 2 sides have been considering a plan to cut tariffs on US beef and pork over a period of more than 10 years. This is on the condition that a safeguard measure will be introduced so that Japan can temporarily raise the tariffs if imports surge.

The 2 countries are also at odds over US tariffs on Japanese automotive parts.
