According to regulations, the tax rate will be applied at 12% in the first year, reduced to 11.5% in the second year, and further lowered to 11% in the third year.

On December 30, India decided to impose tariffs for a period of three years on certain imported steel products. This move is primarily aimed at curbing the influx of cheap steel imports from China.

According to the regulations, the tax rate will be 12% in the first year, reduced to 11.5% in the second year, and further lowered to 11% in the third year.

India, the world's second-largest producer of crude steel, is facing a massive influx of cheap steel from China, raising concerns about dumping and putting significant pressure on domestic steel producers.

This measure, announced in the official gazette of the Indian government , excludes steel imports from certain developing countries. However, steel imports from China and Nepal remain subject to the tariff. The regulation also does not apply to specialized steel products such as stainless steel.

The Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry has repeatedly stated that it does not want the domestic steel industry to suffer losses due to cheap imported steel and low-quality products.

Previously, in April 2025, the Indian government imposed a temporary 12% tariff on imported steel for a period of 200 days, but this measure expired in November 2025.

India's move comes amid escalating global trade tensions over Chinese steel exports, partly stemming from US tariffs. US tariffs have diverted Chinese steel to other markets, forcing many countries to strengthen trade defenses.
