Handloom, handicrafts sector raise demands

VARANASI: Demand for formation of a separate ministry for handloom and handicrafts was raised during the meet of weavers and craftsmen organized at Human Welfare Association resource center, on Monday.
Addressing the meet, representatives of weavers and craftsmen in the region including Amresh Kushwaha, chairman, Banarasi Saree Producers Association highlighted the fact that there are six to eight lakh weavers and craftsmen in the region that have been affected by the global economic recession.
Other demands including grant of status of special organised sector for hand looms and handicrafts, publicity of handloom mark scheme and imposition of anti-dumping duty on Chinese fabrics (silk) were also raised in the meet.
Banaras Bunkar Samiti, a local organisation for hand loom weavers had organised the programme.
