Extention of EU duties not decided yet

The Trade Chief of the European Union, Catherine Ashton, says she has yet to decide whether to extend anti-dumping duties on imports of Chinese shoes.

This is in response to a proposal by the European Commission to extend existing tariffs for at least 15 months.

The duties of 16.5 percent on Chinese shoes must be approved by a majority of the EU's 27 governments. However, most oppose the extension, sending a positive message before the lucrative Christmas retail period.

But major shoe-manufacturers, Italy, Spain, France and Poland want the duties to stay in place.

Companies and industry bodies affected by the proposal have been given until November the 3rd to respond before a final decision by the EU's trade chief.
