National Federal of Coffee of Colombia (FEDERACAFE - Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia) says that coffee of this country is the first non-EU product being issued Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
According to Mr. Gabriel Silva, the Chairman of FEDERACAFE, this issuing will offer Columbia more advantages in trading in its specialized products, especially in the EU’s market, even when prices plummet in international market.
In 2005, Columbia applied the European Commission (EC) to issue PGI for its coffee products.
From 2005 to 2006, Columbia exported 4.15 million sixty-kilogram packages of coffee to the EU, accounting for 38.8% in its total amount of exporting coffee.
