China utilizes WTO rules to counter U.S., EU technical trade barrier

China's State Administration for Market Supervision (SAMS) held a meeting in response to the U.S. and the European Union’s technical trade measures affecting its exports of electric vehicles, lithium batteries and solar cells, utilizing WTO rules to safeguard the rights and interests of enterprises.

On May 1 this year, the EU published rules to calculate the carbon footprint of electric vehicle batteries. On Sept. 9, the U.S. released measures related to “Americans with Disabilities Act and Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Guidelines: Electric Vehicle Charging Stations”, aiming to address the accessibility of electric vehicle charging stations for the disabled.

The above measures, once in force, would limit the export of Chinese electric vehicles to the EU and vehicle charging piles to the U.S., said the SAMS.

Special trade concerns will be raised at the 94th meeting of the WTO Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade in November, according to the SAMS.
