The Chinese government decided to impose anti-dumping tariffs on Korean-made optical fiber products for five additional years. The Korean optical fiber industry regarded the Chinese government's latest decision as a retaliatory move in response to the Korean government's decision to deploy the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) missile defense system.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced through its official website that it decided to extend the period of anti-dumping tariffs on non-dispersion shifted single-mode optical fibers from Korea and Japan for five more years starting from January 1, 2017.

The Chinese ministry claimed, "The termination of the anti-dumping period for those products made in Korea and Japan could lead to the resumption of dumping practices which would have a harmful impact on the Chinese industry."

LS Cable and Taihan Fiber Optics each are now subject to 9.1-percent and 7.9-percent anti-dumping tariffs for their exports to China. Other Korean companies and Japanese companies are paying 46-percent anti-dumping tariffs for their shipments to China.
