Brazil government investigates PP dumping claims

MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)—Brazil’s foreign trade secretariat (Secex) said on Wednesday that it has begun an anti-dumping investigation into imports of polypropylene (PP) from South Africa, India and South Korea.

The investigation will ascertain if such imports have damaged the domestic resins industry, Secex said.

According to a government document, the secretariat is acting on a request from July 2012 made by petrochemicals major Braskem, Brazil’s sole producer of PP.

The period under investigation by Secex will run from April 2011 to March 2012, as well as from April 2007 to March 2012 for the analysis of injury.

The exporting countries were informed of the investigation on 6 March. The document did not identify the producers involved.

In July 2009, the secretariat launched an 18-month anti-dumping investigation relating to US and Indian imports of PP resins, again at the behest of Braskem.

Brazil’s chamber of foreign trade (Camex) subsequently imposed an additional anti-dumping tariff of 10.6%, valid for five years, on PP imports from the US.
