Japan files complaint over China's stainless steel ADDs

Japan has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) over China's anti-dumping duties (ADDs) on stainless steel products exports from Japan.
The Japanese government on 11 June formally requested consultation with China on the ADDs under the WTO agreement. Japan is planning to co-ordinate with the Chinese government to schedule the consultation. The consultation meeting process aims for a mutually satisfactory solution before submitting a request to the WTO for setting up a panel to examine the dispute.
Japan's trade and industry ministry said it had asked China to scrap the duties repeatedly at the WTO and in bilateral talks, claiming that the ADDs could be violating the WTO's general agreement on tariffs and trade and anti-dumping agreement.
Beijing imposed a duty of 18.1pc on stainless steel products, such as stainless steel slabs, hot-rolled stainless steel sheets and hot-rolled stainless steel coil, from Japanese firm Nippon Yakin Kogyo and 29pc duties on the products from other Japanese firms since July 2019.
